How to Create the Perfect Gear List for a Day of Fishing

How to Create the Perfect Gear List for a Day of Fishing

Fishing in the Smoky Mountains is a beautiful and exciting experience. Our lakes, streams, rivers and brooks are home to some world-class fishing. Whether you are bass fisherman, an avid fly fisherman or just getting into the sport, one thing that is certain is fishing is all about the gear. This week we have the ultimate gear list for the fisherman in your family. Don't forget – Father's Day is just around the corner...hint, hint.

Good sunglasses

Fishing is fun, but it isn't very good for the eyes. That is, if you leave them unprotected. Not only is the sun bright, but when reflecting off of the water its power is magnified. Investing in a good pair of sunglasses not only protects the eyes, but they will also help you have better vision into the water. We like a good set of polarized sunglasses. Make sure to read the label to ensure they offer full UV protection.

North Carolina Fishing License

We know, this might not be very interesting, but it is important. Many folks forget to get a license and can find themselves receiving a hefty fine for fishing without a license. A license can be purchased online or at many local gas stations and sporting good stores. Click here for everything you need to know about the North Carolina fishing license.

Quality cooler

Coolers come in all shapes and sizes and not all coolers are created equal. The popularity of the Yeti is in large part due to its quality and ability to keep things cold for a very long time. However, you don't have to have a three hundred dollar cooler. We love a soft shell cooler. They are often lighter, easier to carry and many have attachment points for other accessories. Invest in a quality cooler and you won't be let down at the end of the day.

Multi-tool

Often called a Leatherman or a Gerber, having a multi-tool on you can be a lifesaver. Whether you want to cut a line or need to use the pliers to remove a hook, a multi-tool (pardon the pun) has multiple uses on the water. We like a set that includes both scissors and pliers.

A good net

There are a lot of things you can live without on the water, but a net is really not one of them. Fishing from a boat requires a longer net (an extendable one is good) and for fly-fishing, smaller and lighter ones are preferable. There is a wide range of nets on the market. Some almost look like works of art. No matter which one you choose, make sure to get a good quality net. You don't want the "big one" to get away because you bought a cheap net.

Portable fish finder

A portable fish finder (or sounder) is an electronic tool that is used to locate fish underwater. It works by detecting reflected pulses of sound energy. The best fish finders on the market will display the measurements on a graphic, allowing anglers to locate schools of fish based on the information. We know this is a bit of a splurge item, but hey, this is fishing, you deserve it.

Quality waders

Waders aren't just for fly fishing. With so many water ways, little coves and other places to explore, having a good set of waters is like having a passport to secret fishing honey holes. Invest in a good pair of waders and you might discover a whole new world of fishing.

Fishing vest

A fishing vest (along with waders) is a piece of clothing we recommend investing in. In fact, many consider a fishing vest the ultimate accessory. Many think that only fly fisherman use vests, but they are so useful that every type of fisherman can benefit from having a vest. Not only will a fishing vest keep you comfortable, it will also offer ample storage for all of your essentials.

A good partner

Fishing is a great sport for seeking solitude, but we all can agree it is best shared with someone. Whether you are looking to take your kids fishing for the first time or just spending some time with dad, a day on the water with a friend is something special. Take some time this summer during your Smoky Mountain vacation to plan a day where you can drop a line with your favorite fishing buddy. Memories last longer than fish. Tall tales are always welcome. Leave a comment below with your favorite place, fishing story or memory.

The only thing missing from your gear is a luxury cabin. Luckily, we have a great selection of some of the best cabins in the Smoky Mountains. All of our cabins put you in the heart of some of the best fishing in the country.
